Open since 1949, Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is a constituent unit of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. With generous assistance from GlaxoSmithKline, Morehead installed state-of-the-art fulldome digital video in 2010, making it the largest planetarium in the South with this exciting technology. Morehead welcomed more than 170,000 guests last year alone, including more than 80,000 schoolchildren.
In addition to its offerings in Chapel Hill, Morehead delivers high-quality science outreach programming, including entrichment programs, mobile lab visits, mobile planetarium shows and science on stage presentations across North Carolina.
While Morehead’s primary focus is the state of North Carolina, Morehead’s quality programs are recognized nationally and internationally. Morehead-produced fulldome planetarium shows can now be seen on three continents. Morehead staff have also been asked to present at international conferences as far away as China and Jordan.
Morehead’s mission is to inspire and inform the public about the foundations and frontiers of scientific discovery.
