Recruit a team for the North Carolina Gravity Games

Design, build and race your own “soap box”-type car in the North Carolina Gravity Games! This statewide competition will be hosted in Lenoir, N.C., on April 5, 2014, by Google in cooperation with Appalachian State University and North Carolina Science Festival. High schools are eligible to enter teams in the “Gravity Only” and “Open Powered” divisions. Registration is open until March 22, 2014, but team spaces are limited, so register now so you won’t miss out on the fun!

Science Spotlight — just for high school students!

New in 2014, North Carolina Science Festival introduces Science Spotlight, a program especially designed to lead high school students in thinking critically about important issues and “hot topics” in science today.

Science Spotlight includes three components: a detailed curriculum that explores science issues in the news; classroom discussions; and an online discussion with an expert in the topic (the Festival will pair an appropriate science researcher with each participating school). This year’s interdisciplinary issues include nuclear energy and fracking, topics that are sure to spark engaging discussions in environmental science, chemistry or social science courses.

Across North Carolina, 25 high schools will participate in the inaugural Science Spotlight program. Each selected school will receive the Science Spotlight curriculum free of charge.

2014 Science Spotlight application process closed

Thanks for your interest! We received applications from 30 teachers by the application deadline and the application process is now closed. The Festival is working to accommodate as many schools as possible, with the goal of representing all regions of North Carolina.

If your school was not selected or you missed the deadline, but you want to host a Science Spotlight at your school, you can request access to free, downloadable materials that will give you all the information you need for a successful event. Email the Festival at ncscifestschools@unc.edu for your access link.
