Special Opportunities

Earth Day 2020

April 22 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, and sites across North Carolina are celebrating with Festival events.

Citizen Science

NCSciFest partners offer a range of opportunties for North Carolinians to participate through Citizen Science programs. The City Nature Challenge takes place April 24-27 and challenges the people of different metropolitan areas to see who can tag the most organisms.

This year's Festival brings several great opportunities to learn more about DNA and genetics:

  • On April 2, UNC-TV will host a special preview and panel discussion of Ken Burns' latest film, The Gene: An Intimate History, which will air in two parts on April 7 and 14.
  • NC DNA Day, which takes place on April 24, is an annual event where scientists from NC’s leading research universities and institutions visit high schools statewide to present interactive, hands-on lessons about genetics, genomics, and biotechnology.

Founded by the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation, the IMPACTS program is a prestigious and highly competitive program that provides scientists and STEM professionals with high-quality science communication workshops and real-world application of their newly acquired skills.
